Surveys show that, of all the set piece organizational occasions, the annual appraisal is the most dreaded. Managers claim that they are embarrassing; staff say they are unfair. Appraisals that are no more than rituals are likely to lead to such reactions. But the appraisal, if properly conducted, can be of huge benefit to managers and staff. As a set piece, it is a chance to re-assess the quality of the work relationship. As an ongoing skill, it is a chance to continually improve it.
